Above the Viking swords and skeletons, opposite the charming display of antique dollhouses, the National Museum of Denmark contains a human-scale hamster wheel. Visitors can climb inside, grab the controls and slowly, arduously, begin walking and jogging. A digital screen turns the treadmill into a pizza delivery game, offering the chance to collect some virtual money along the way. Representing the repetitive grind of a gig economy job, the subtext is obvious. Unless you're 11, that is. My son loved it. The hamster wheel is the centerpiece of an exhibition about money and economics: KA-CHING — Show me the money! In addition to coins and bills, it has interactive quizzes, footage of Damien Hirst's "For The Love Of God" (that diamond and platinum skull), and a video of musicians Jimmy Cauty and Bill Drummond, aka The KLF, burning a million pounds. on an island in the Hebrides in 1994. (Alas, I didn't notice any discussion about the true value of what Cauty and Drummond were destroying; curious readers can pick up a copy of my book The Undercover Economist Strikes Back if they're desperate to know.

All in all, KA-CHING! It is probably the best candidate I have seen for a Museum of Economics. On the other hand, there is not much competition. I have long fantasized about creating such an institution, but India Car Owner Phone Number List seem to agree. While museums of science, technology and natural history grace large cities around the world, museums of economics are rare. Part of the problem is that economics tends to study large, diffuse phenomena through an abstract lens. Museums flourish when there is something interesting to see, whether it's a Spitfire or the skeleton of a T-Rex. Good luck putting “recession” or “investment mania” in a glass case. And so many museums adjacent to the economy move away from the central theme. The Bank of England Museum, for example, is quite nice: spacious, elegant, free to enter, but its theme is really the Bank of England itself. There are exhibits on the building's architecture, the slave-trading heroes and villains who roamed its halls, and, of course, coins and bills and a large gold bar inside a plexiglass box: you can stick your hand through a hole and try to pick it up.

Copenhagen's KA-CHING! exhibition offers almost exactly the same plexiglass-boxed gold bullion lifting experience.) A new book, Making Economics Public, includes a chapter describing the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis Museum of Economics. The Museum of Economics tries to discuss and demonstrate economic ideas beyond money. There's an exhibit on choice and opportunity cost, an eight-player simulation of a trading pit, a bartering game. Sounds like fun, even if the museum also contains one of those damned gold bar-raising exhibits. Could we do better? Maybe. When I created my books and radio series Fifty Things That Made Modern Economics, my goal was to show the hidden economic forces around us by refracting them through everyday inventions. Not everyone compares favorably to a T-Rex, unfortunately. I'm not sure how one would put “the welfare state” in a museum.
